Togo successively lived under domination of Germany, France and Great-Britain before gaining its independence on April 27th 1960. From that day on, the country suffered from long-lasting political conflicts and violence and its inhabitants are now trying to pick themselves up and put the terrible years of dictatorship behind them, although the republic is still criticized for its less than stellar human-rights record.
Togo’s territories are rich and diverse, presenting hilly areas as well as forests and savanna. The country is renowned for its culinary culture and regional specialties, for instance the snails and crab that are commonly found on the coastline.
Industry in Togo is basically non-existent, leaving agriculture as the main national economic sector. It employs two thirds of the population, specializing in the productions of cotton and cocoa as well as coffee on the shores of Lake Togo.
Babyloan has been supporting projects in Togo since 2010 thanks to Wages, our partner on the field. Supporting the inhabitants of Togo is a priority for our social business and as of now, 73% of the projects funded by Babyloan in this country are held by women.
