Senegal declared its independence in 1960 after years of domination by foreign countries among which France and Portugal. The country has opted to live under a semi-presidential republican regime. Senegal is a diverse country, both in relations to its landscapes, featuring both coastal and desert areas, and to the various ethnic groups that constitute its population. The country is home to a large number of natural wonders such as the dunes of the Lompoul desert and the N’Gor island surf beaches.
The country cannot count on its scarce natural resources to fuel its economy, and the economy in Senegal mostly relies on its agriculture and industry. The colonial system has very much left its mark on the agricultural sector and, with its intensive production of peanuts, Senegal remains a single-crop farming country. The Senegalese industry is slowly lifting off the ground and revolves around the transformation process of raw materials into finished products such as oil and soap.
Babyloan has been supporting projects in Senegal since 2012 thanks to MEC Delta, our Senegalese partner on the field. Supporting the population in Senegal is a priority for our social business and as of now, 60% of the projects funded by Babyloan in this country are held by women.
