Haiti stands out as having been the first country with a black majority to have declared its independence as a republic in this part of the world. To this day, Haiti is the last stronghold of the French language within a mostly Spanish and English speaking area. The country has had to endure more than its share of political turmoil under the infamous rule of Papa Doc and still remains vulnerable to natural disasters, especially during the hurricane season between June and November. In spite of all this, Haiti harbors a large number of classified UNESCO World Heritage sites, among which the impressive Sans-Souci Palace.
Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the region and mostly survives on the production and export of coffee but also engages in the more lucrative production of coca. The agricultural sector is what most Haitians live on and it employs two thirds of the population. Fishing also turns out to be a popular yet still developing field of activity in Haiti.
Babyloan has been supporting projects in Haiti since 2013 thanks to Palmis, our Haitian partner on the field. Supporting the Haitian population is a priority for our social business and as of now, 79% of the projects funded by Babyloan in Haiti are held by women.
